How a visit goes

From your call to a working machine

  1. 1

    Tell us what is wrong

Ring us or fill in the booking card: which machine, what it does, your ZIP. A person calls back to agree on a time, any of the seven days, 8 AM–7 PM.

  2. 2

    A meter, not a hunch

At your door the technician confirms power first, runs a cycle, then takes readings on the parts that fit the symptom. The diagnosis comes from numbers on the meter.

  3. 3

    A cost you can hold

Before a screw is turned, the repair cost is written out for you. Say yes, and the visit charge is swallowed by that figure. Say no, and only the trip gets billed, with our notes left in your hands.

  4. 4

    Fixed, and on paper

Igniters, pumps, fuses and valves ride along in the van, which lets plenty of jobs close out in a single trip. Parts we need to order get a return date pinned down before we leave. Your invoice lists the warranty in plain terms.

The name

Why we are called Salmon Bay

Salmon Bay is the stretch of water between Ballard and Magnolia at the west end of the ship canal. Before the locks opened in 1917 it was a tidal inlet that drained to mudflats at low tide; the locks raised it to the level of Lake Union and turned it fresh. Fishing boats still tie up along its shores between seasons, and every summer salmon pass through on their way to the lakes and streams upstream.

We liked a name that belongs to the city's working waterfront, where gear gets mended and kept in service. That is how we treat a refrigerator or a washer: find the worn part, fix it, and keep the machine running.

Seattle notes

Soft water, damp months, small kitchens

Soft water

Seattle tap water carries very little mineral, so heating elements stay clean but detergent goes further than the label says. Use less in washers and dishwashers to avoid suds errors and cloudy glasses.

The damp months

From October into spring the air stays damp. Dryer vents load with lint faster, front-loader seals stay wet, and garage appliances sit in the cold. Leave the washer door ajar and check the vent hood each fall.

Small kitchens and closets

Galley kitchens, stacked laundry and counter-depth fridges leave little room for air. Keep a gap behind the fridge and around closet dryers; trapped heat shortens the life of fans, fuses and compressors.

FAQ

Before you book

How soon can you come?

Call before noon and a same-day slot is common; otherwise, the next day. Our schedule runs all seven days, 8 AM–7 PM.

What does the diagnostic visit cover?

A technician's trip, testing to find the cause, and the repair cost written out. Go ahead with the repair and the diagnostic fee is counted toward it.

Do you handle LG and Whirlpool warranty repairs?

Yes. We are LG and Whirlpool authorized, a family that includes Maytag, KitchenAid, JennAir and Amana. Covered repairs on those makes are handled by us, and we are still an independent, local company.

Which neighborhoods are on your map?

Ballard, Magnolia, Queen Anne, Fremont, Green Lake, Capitol Hill, West Seattle and Beacon Hill, plus the blocks in between. If you are not sure, put your ZIP code in the request.

Are your technicians licensed?

We hold a Washington appliance repair license, and every technician holds EPA 608 Universal certification for refrigerant work, so sealed-system repairs happen in your home.

Put your machine on our schedule

Describe the trouble and we ring back to fix a time and quote the visit charge. The repair figure goes on paper, and nothing gets unscrewed until you have read it and said yes.
