Refrigerators we fix

What we hear on refrigerator calls

Most refrigerator calls in the city come down to air, ice and a few small parts. A frozen evaporator coil blocks the cold air meant for the fresh-food compartment. When a defrost heater or its thermostat quits, frost builds until the fan blade scrapes it. A start relay clicks every few minutes while the compressor stays silent. A meter and a thermometer tell us which part is to blame before anything gets ordered, and you get the number in ink first.

  1. Warm up top, cold below

Most often a frozen evaporator coil or a stalled fan behind the freezer panel. The cold is there; it just cannot travel.

  2. Frost on the rear panel

Something in the defrost circuit, heater, sensor or control, has quit. Left alone, ice spreads until no air moves.

  3. Puddles below the crispers

The defrost drain has iced up or clogged, and melt water that should reach the pan underneath ends up inside the fridge.

  4. Clicking, then silence

A failing start relay or overload, sometimes a compressor that will not start. We test which one before anything is ordered.

  5. A loud fan or a buzzing hum

Ice touching a fan blade, a worn condenser fan motor, or a compressor straining against dusty coils.

  6. Doors that do not seal

Torn gaskets, a sagging door or a cabinet that sits out of level. Damp air gets in and frost follows.

In your home

Refrigerator Repair where the refrigerator stands

When the trouble sits in the sealed system, meaning the compressor, the coils or the refrigerant itself, our technicians hold EPA 608 Universal certification and do the brazing, evacuation and recharge in your kitchen. Nobody hauls the fridge across town to a shop.

Seattle summers are short, but during the few hot weeks a kitchen without air conditioning pushes an old compressor hard, and weak start parts give out first. In the damp months the more common trouble is a door gasket that has stiffened and lets moist air in, which loads the coil with frost.

How a visit goes

From your call to a working machine

  1. 1

    Tell us what is wrong

Ring us or fill in the booking card: which machine, what it does, your ZIP. A person calls back to agree on a time, any of the seven days, 8 AM–7 PM.

  2. 2

    A meter, not a hunch

At your door the technician confirms power first, runs a cycle, then takes readings on the parts that fit the symptom. The diagnosis comes from numbers on the meter.

  3. 3

    A cost you can hold

Before a screw is turned, the repair cost is written out for you. Say yes, and the visit charge is swallowed by that figure. Say no, and only the trip gets billed, with our notes left in your hands.

  4. 4

    Fixed, and on paper

Igniters, pumps, fuses and valves ride along in the van, which lets plenty of jobs close out in a single trip. Parts we need to order get a return date pinned down before we leave. Your invoice lists the warranty in plain terms.

FAQ

Refrigerators: questions we hear

Can you fix the sealed system without taking the fridge away?

Yes. Compressor replacement, leak repair and the recharge are done in your home by an EPA 608 Universal certified technician. On the first visit we tell you whether that work is worth it on a fridge of that age.

My fridge is an LG or a Whirlpool still under warranty. Can you take it?

Yes. Our LG and Whirlpool authorization reaches Maytag, KitchenAid, JennAir and Amana as well. Covered repairs on those makes are handled by us; have the purchase date ready when we call back.

Do I unplug a warm fridge while I wait?

No, keep it plugged in. The exceptions: water reaching a floor that could be damaged, or frost jamming the fan. Otherwise the technician wants to catch the fault in the act.

How long can food sit in a fridge that stopped cooling?

A closed refrigerator holds a safe temperature for about four hours without cooling. If the fresh-food side reads above 40°F, the perishables (milk, meat, cooked food) belong in an iced cooler until we arrive.

Do you repair counter-depth and built-in models?

Yes, including counter-depth French-door units and built-in columns. Share the model number when we phone back, and the likely parts come along.
